Production Design: Final Year Film
Up, Up and Away- Director Elena Feeney Belluschi
My experience on the film was a fifty fifty slit of
organisation and chaos. I had read the script, organised costumes for the
leads, the colour pallet of primary colours, organised every balloon that was
need, the helium and colour of the helium can etc. a week prior the paintings
on the walls etc. But because we were to shoot in the middle of March but due
to the child actor pulling out it was pushed a week forward. But then my
Grandad was dying so for the first day of shooting, I was not present as the lead
production designer and the secondary production designer was not their either.
Plus I could not contact anyone due to hospital regulations with phones and by
the time I would get home, it was too late for me to call, text or email.
But the following week, I had draw out plans, went home to
Mayo to get a literal suitcase full of props for the little boy’s bedroom, and
painted, constructed and dressed up a headboard for the bed. The boy’s room was
to use the same colour pallet with an animal theme. This time I was much more
prepared.
On set, for the first location, which was a school, I
dressed the set with supplies and items that were available at the school as
per the directors’ request. I did the makeup of the female actor, to be subtle
as to contrast with the bright primary colours of the primary school.
I had dressed the boy’s room the previous night. Everything
had to be dressed from the top down. The bed, the sheets, curtains I had to
bring in, desk, toys, books, the colour coded copy books etc. Only one major
issue occurred on set. The sheets that were used for the notes that were
attached to the balloons were smaller and they needed a replica. I was able to
find an A4 sheet and trimmed it down to the size of the copy book and shaped its
edges and cut off extra bits. The director was delighted.
After the shoot, in the edit suite, the director asked me to
go some drawings for the credits. So, I used stills of the actors as reference
so we could continue the story after the film was finished, in the credits. I
sketched them out originally and scanned them in and digitally painted them with
my Wacom.
Overall, bar the time where I didn’t have control over the
set due to circumstances out of my control, I had an enjoyable experience on
set. I had worked with this director and most of the crew many times before, so
it was a nice work environment. If I were to do anything differently, I would
want to have a third assistant on call for the set just to cover all my bases
and forward on my plans for the set.
